http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/car/225506912.html

It has over 220K, 160k with 50k rebuilt engine. Flaking white paint, chips on the body, minor rust around the area. He said it is in fair condition. When I looked at it, it need some work with expired Sept. 06 tags. I was thinking that it didn't pass smog so that he is selling it for blue book value. Hood looks like it was damaged because the hinge near the windshield was kinda sticking out..Soft top had rivets around the seams of the window..I can actually stick my hand through to the window and feel inside

Well before buying i would think about a few things.
1. willingness to spend another 2k to fix issues
2. having a tech do a full inspection on the car first.
3. make sure sell has it smoged for you. CA state law and all.
4. know that you will really enjoy the ride.

$2K for rpains includes.
1. new top $400 to $700 installed
2. bad paint job maco $700
3. get all new fluids all the way around
4. T-belts, water pump, plugs, wires filters

ehhh probably not worth it, you can get something MUCH more promising for more like 2000-2500.

i got lucky with mine at 1700, the "newer" (8slot crank pulle) 1.6 motor seems to be in awesome condition and still low miles, the top/window was just replaced, no expired tags, passed smog no problem, BUT the body was HOSED but i knew that when i bought it.

i saw the bondo caked all over, but i enjoy that kind of work, so it was a cheap fix.

i wouldn't drop 1700 on a miata unless it was like mine, one major flaw that you dont mind fixing, but otherwise pretty sound.

yikes.... it is a decent price, but i wouldn't pick that up, at least unless i could negotiate 5-800$ off that price... but if you want that one, you better be ready to invest some money into general maintenence and all the other stuff that is bound to pop up...

i wouldn't call that a deal, i would say it is priced fairly, but the seller doesnt seem too motivated... at least not yet...

I would say no. There will be better deals out there. Wait for it. However on the other hand. I bought my car in similar condition. It was dented up badly, softtop was ok, interior was clean, no rust, head gasket was beginning stages of leak, valve cover was leaking, cas was leaking, radiator was about to crack, SF car that wasn't driven much on the expressway. I guess its a matter of how long you plan on keeping it and do you know what needs to be fixed and how much it'll cost. I will be the last owner of my miata, it will be buried with me. :D

how much did you buy it for? how much did you spend on repairing/upgrading stuff for it?

Sounds like a pretty nice basis for a Spec Miata. If you want a street car, spend more money. Trust me. I started out with a $3000 budget, paid $4200 for my car, and I don't regret it for a second.

There are TONS of miata's in the bay area going up on craigslist all the time. You will find a better deal and the longer you wait the more money you'll save. Trust me you can find real gems for twice the price here.

I bought mine for way under 2000. However dont judge your cost of repairs with mine. Because when i repaired mine, i replaced it with much better components that will outlast the car as well as fit my future plans for the car. I've spent probably 6000+ so far. View my sig, it lists some of them

IMHO any decent running & currently registered Miata will usually be worth at least $1.5K

The one in the ad looks OK (not the greatest photos, but nothing obvious)

Yeah, if I were interested - I might watch the car and if it don't sell, offer a lower price, no harm in trying to get one cheap, but I would guess he'll find a buyer for no less that $1.5K
