Preparing for Your First Bikini or Brazilian Wax (2024)

To ensure that your first Bikini or Brazilian wax at Signature Medical Spa goes smoothly, we have completed this guide on what you can expect before, after, and during your treatment.

When scheduling your first bikini wax or Brazilian, consider timing. Waxing just before or during a menstrual cycle will make the waxing feel more uncomfortable, due to a lowered pain threshold during that time. Length of hair in the area to be waxed should be at least a quarter of an inch in order for the wax to grab the hair. If the hair is quite long, the client may choose to carefully trim the hair to no less than half an inch to make the waxing more comfortable. Some clients also choose to take an over the counter pain reliever to ease the discomfort from waxing (which is similar to removing a band aid from a part of the body with hair).

When scheduling the waxing appointment, a client should think about how much hair she would like to have removed. A bikini wax removes the hair outside of the bikini, while a Brazilian wax removes all of the hair or everything but a tiny strip. A Brazilian wax takes longer than a traditional bikini wax so the spa will need to know which you would like in order to schedule the right amount of time. Clients who are new to waxing this area may wish to start with the Bikini or Bikini Bare (in between Brazilian and Bikini wax) to gauge how well they tolerate the waxing.

After the waxing, clients may see slight pinpoint bleeding in the hair follicle and redness that may last a couple of hours. It is completely normal and should cause no reason for concern. Sun exposure should be avoided immediately after waxing, preferably up to 24 hours to avoid sunburn. When the hair begins to regrow, the client is advised to begin using an exfoliating “scrub” in the shower or bath. This will help to prevent ingrown hairs which are caused by a buildup of dead skin that can trap the hair. Most clients maintain their waxing every four to six weeks for best results.
