Summary

  • Frank Grillo battles lycanthropes in new movie Werewolves, set to release on December 6, 2024.

  • Werewolves promises practical effects, powerhouse cast including Frank Grillo, Katrina Law, and Ilfenesh Hadera.

Action star Frank Grillo may be used to fending off violent humans in his films, but this time around, he'll be battling lycanthropes in his new movie Werewolves that’s set to release on December 6, 2024. Grillo, who starred in the action-thriller Lights Out earlier this year, is perhaps best known for his roles as Sgt. Leo Barnes in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year, as well as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the MCU. He’ll also be featured in the upcoming DCU television projects Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2 as Rick Flag Sr.

As per Deadline, Werewolves is set to tear its way into cinemas this December, and alongside Grillo the film also stars Katrina Law (NCIS), Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather Of Harlem), James Michael Cummings (City On The Hill) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Prodigal Son). The movie is helmed by Steven C. Miller, whose previous directorial efforts include the 2019 action-thriller Line of Duty, with a script by Matthew Kennedy (Inheritance). Check out the synopsis for Werewolves below.

“In Werewolves, a supermoon event triggers a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back.”

Best Werewolf Movies of All Time, Ranked

The werewolf is one of the most iconic movie monsters and has been featured in a wide variety of genres. Here are the best werewolf movies.

Werewolves is being released by Briarcliff Entertainment and The Solution Entertainment Group, who are thrilled to be displaying the film theatrically later this year. Myles Nestel, co-CEO of The Solution, released a statement today touting Werewovles’ incredible cast, as well as its practical effects, which are done by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., whose previous credits include the Alien franchise, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters to name a couple. He says the movie will take the werewolf genre back to its roots in a “fresh and exciting way.”

“We are super excited to be releasing Werewolves later this year exclusively in theaters. Our cast is incredible, from the amazing Frank Grillo to powerhouse performances from Katrina Law and Ilfenesh Hadera. The use of practical werewolves designed and built by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. takes the genre back to its roots in a fresh and exciting way. We hope audiences will have as much fun experiencing the film in theaters as we had making it!”

Frank Grillo Describes His New Horror Movie as “The Purge Meets Werewolves”

There have been various takes on the werewolf ever since the creatures were made famous by The Wolf Man in 1941, and since that time a number of distinct films have gone on to be regarded as cult-classics today, including An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, The Company of Wolves, and Ginger Snaps. While there are a bunch of different werewolf movies still to come in 2024 and beyond, perhaps none are as bold as Werewolves in terms of plot.

Speaking with MovieWeb earlier this year to promote Lights Out, star Frank Grillo describes his new horror-thriller with the best pitch ever, calling it “The Purge meets werewolves.” He says that in addition to being action packed, the practical effects are going to impress audiences with “a bunch of big guys.”

“Steven C. Miller, who directed [Werewolves], has gone above and beyond what he's done in the past and he's taken his time. They put a lot of money into the post. It's practical werewolves, it's a bunch of big guys, seven-footers. It's basically The Purge meets werewolves, because it's a night when there's a supermoon and there's this kind of disease… just go watch the movie.”

Oh, we will, Frank. We will. Werewolves hits theaters on December 6, 2024.
