There are two “seasons” for horse racing here in North County San Diego. The first season takes place in the summer (August through September) and the second in the fall/winter (November through December).

A Thoroughbred distance race can lasts a maximum of 3 minutes at a gallop. Sprints are shorter. Marathons or endurance rides (where Arabians excel) run at a slower pace - mostly alternating at a trot and canter. Specific races can last can last 9 hours or even 5 days or 2 weeks.

It's the first time Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has held Opening Day on a Saturday since the 1950s. The club says the scheduling adjustment was made due to the San Diego County Fair running through July 7 this year.

Del Mar Racetrack opened on July 3, 1937 and is currently owned by the State of California and operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Del Mar Racing ticket prices during the current racing season are starting as low as $13.23 and the most expensive tickets are costing up to $540.00. The average ticket price to attend a single race during the 2024 season is $35.09.

The 22nd District Agricultural Association owns and operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds as an institution of the State of California, and is governed by a nine-member board appointed by the governor.

Turf Club Dress Code

Suits or daytime dresses are preferred. Slacks and tailored denim may be worn with tailored jackets.

Personal food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome to the racetrack, except in trackside restaurant table seating, suites, and skyrooms. Outside alcoholic beverages and glass containers of any kind are prohibited from all areas of the track, including parking areas.

Children 17 & under are permitted to attend and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. Admission is free and discounted Grandstand Seating is available for children 17 & under. Patrons must be at least 18 years of age to wager. Alcohol is served only to patrons ages 21 & over.
